Strategic planning Adelaide
Strategic Planning
Helping businesses build effective strategies to achieve long-term success in a dynamic market.
Matt McQuinley used strategic planning to take his own business from a standing start to 13 locations and export markets in 26 countries, before selling it in 2019. Green Knight Coaching’s strategic planning service in Adelaide turns that same real-world approach into a written, actionable roadmap for your business. Read Matt’s full story.
What Strategic Planning With Green Knight Involves
Strategic planning with Matt turns a vague sense of direction into a written roadmap, built session by session using his GPS Method. It’s not a document that gets filed away. Progress is tracked and reviewed on a set schedule.
Depending on where your business is headed, a plan can pull in other focuses:
- Business coaching for ongoing accountability once the plan is set
- Leadership development for the people who’ll execute the plan
- Team building to cascade the plan through your staff
- Sales training when growth targets depend on sales performance
Why Choose Green Knight Coaching
Real Scaling Experience
Matt used his own strategic plans to grow a business to 13 locations and export operations across 26 countries.
A Proven Framework
Every plan runs through the structured four-step GPS Method, not a generic template.
Built for Execution
Plans come with scheduled accountability check-ins, so they get implemented instead of filed away.
Is Strategic Planning Right for You?
Annual / Operational Planning
No formal plan yet. Start with a clear 12-month roadmap and priorities.
3-5 Year Growth Vision
Established and ready to define where the business is headed, including expansion or new markets.
Crisis Pivot Planning
Something urgent has changed, a downturn, a market shift, or a big opportunity, and the old plan no longer fits.
This is for you if:
- You don’t have anything written down beyond what’s in your head
- You want a plan that actually gets executed, not shelved
- You’re facing a major decision and want an outside perspective
This probably isn’t for you if:
- You already have a detailed plan and just need accountability, see business coaching instead
- You want a consultant to write the plan without your input
- You’re not willing to commit to quarterly reviews
Business Plan vs Strategic Plan
These get used interchangeably, but they answer different questions.
Business Plan
Covers a year or less. Day-to-day tactics, sales targets and financial projections, often written for investors or lenders.
Strategic Plan
Covers 2 to 5 years. High-level direction, competitive positioning and long-term sustainability, written for your team and stakeholders.
Both Matter
The strategic plan sets the destination. The business plan is the next 12 months of steps toward it.
Most Adelaide small businesses have neither. If you’re starting out or raising funds, a business plan comes first, the Australian Government’s business.gov.au planning hub has free templates for that. If you’re established and want direction for growth, this service is the strategic plan.
Why Strategic Planning Works: The Data
| Metric | Finding |
|---|---|
| Business survival (Australia) | 75% of new Australian businesses survive their first year, falling to 48% by year three |
| Plan and viability | Entrepreneurs who write a formal plan are 16% more likely to achieve business viability |
| Growth with a plan | Businesses with a plan grow around 30% faster than those without clear goals or direction |

Question 1 of 3
Do you currently have anything written down about your business direction?
Question 2 of 3
What’s changed in your business recently?
Question 3 of 3
How far ahead do you want to plan?
Signs You Need Strategic Planning
- You don’t have anything written down beyond what’s in your head
- Decisions get made reactively, not against a plan
- Your team can’t tell you where the business is headed in 3 years
- You’re considering a major move, new location, export market or acquisition, without a roadmap
- Growth has stalled despite working harder, see business coaching
- You’re preparing to raise capital, bring on a partner, or sell
- The market has shifted and your old plan no longer fits
The Green Knight GPS Method
Every strategic plan runs on the same four-step framework (full breakdown on the Approach page):
You can run Step 1 yourself right now with the free Business GPS Assessment, a 10 to 12 minute scan of your structural foundations, founder dependency and revenue architecture.
What to Expect in Your First Session
Matt reviews where your business actually stands, then helps you identify the right planning horizon: annual, 3 to 5 year, or a crisis pivot.
Book the free 60-minute session and you’ll leave with a free action plan outlining the first page of your roadmap, regardless of whether you continue into a full program. If it’s not a fit, Matt will tell you directly.
How Often You’ll Review Your Plan
A strategic plan isn’t written once and forgotten. Common practice is a full annual review, quarterly check-ins to track KPIs and progress, and an as-needed update any time something major shifts, a downturn, a new competitor, or a big opportunity.
